Title: Poll - how many of you are still using 3ds Max 2013 or 2014?
Post by: TomG on 2019-10-29, 14:05:29
Hi all!

We'd like to know how many of you are still using 3ds Max 2013 or 2014. Please vote in the poll above if you are using either of these versions.

If you are using either version, what would you do if Corona no longer supported those versions? Would you upgrade Max to a newer version that Corona does support? You can also let us know here in the comments why you are still using those versions in particular (but for ease of seeing results, please also vote in the poll too, so we get a good count :) )

Thanks!

I still use 2014 from time to time as I find it more stable than any other MAX version that comes after it. I've had issues in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and haven't bothered with 2019/2020.

At work, I'm stuck more or less stuck with what I'm given (I use 2014/17 there), but for personal work I'm using 2018, but not crazy about it hence why I still use 2014 from time to time.
I don't think dropping support for them would bother me much as I'd just settle with another version, but I can't speak for others obviously.

I use 2016 and 2020.  2016 is stable, 2020 seems to have a penchant for crashing while merging Max scenes and when using GrowFX.  Dropping 2014 is no problem for me, personally, just keep 2016 indefinitely :)

I'm affraid that after 2014 will be dropped, 2016 will be next. Hopefully we still have couple years, but when new 3ds max releases are getting worse and worse... :[ Maybe Corona for Blender will happen by then.

I use 2015 with lifetime licence. I'll probably stick to Corona version which still supports 2015, which means no new features.

I bought 2 years ago a legal version of 2014. It cost a looot of money. If Corona will be not supoprted for 2014 than i will have to change my software to Blender. I have not chance to pay 2200 Euro every year for 3ds max.

Well, they adressed the poorest countries, like US, UK, Canada. I guess the rest should be able to afford 3ds Max at full price.

Well in my "rich" country prices are at full. I hope that my country will be in near future so poor like US, UK and Canada to be able get 250$ for a year for indie's like me...Actually in my country (Poland) we very, very happy that all discount's are so far from us, we don't need them...we just love to work 16 hours per day to pay a software and bills :) It was sarcasm off course:)

Dear Tom,

I think I don't fully understand Corona's 3dsmax support policy. On your website you claim "support for these versions (2013-2016) is unofficial as we cannot test Corona Renderer under versions prior to 3ds Max 2017, due to Autodesk licensing restrictions." What do you mean you can't test corona on previous versions? As far as I'm concerned it's possible to get "second hand" 2013/14/15/16 with perpetual license legally via autodesk support, why can't you? Also hiring 2013-2016 owners as testers would be an option don't you think? In my humble opinion dropping support for mentioned 3dsmax versions means loosing users or leaving them with last compatible corona build at best.

As for upgrading to new 3dsmax, I know that Autodesk's policy is about forcing people to buy their brand new shiny products and keeping them on a subscriber's leash, but I don't want to buy a new car where my "old one" is perfectly fine (2016) As they say maybe it's old but not obsolete. I's worth mentioning, corona suits my needs perfectly and I really don't want to change that.

PS: Autodesk's indie license region restrictions and excluding Europe from this "privileged" group is just lame. They show their true colors doing that. We all know that, but these people are really blind... sad but true

best regards,
TH

I have the same opinion about Autodesk's policy. I own Max 2014, and I've tried newer version hoping to see some real improvements, but after 6 years of updates there are still not much changed. Most of the "new" features were scripted by clever guys in 2010-2016 before they were implemented to Max (feels like Autodesk just copied there ideas), and thanks to these guys I can use those features with Max 2014. Even viewport performance haven't been really improved. After so much time of tiny updates I still don't think that buying the new version of 3DS Max worth of it's prices yet.
So I'm still happy with my 2014 car and I love Corona. I always was interested of newest features and real improvements of Corona, and will be happy to continue with it. Would be happy to be a part of testing team

but when new 3ds max releases are getting worse and worse...

Is this the case really?
I'm a Max 2016 user. But, if you jump from Max 2016 to Max 2020.2... I don't know. It may be worth it, especially for the tear-off viewports (next version I think?)

I have to agree. I got used to 2017, but 2014 is still the most stable/fastest after trying out 16-18. Haven't bothered with 19 or 20.

I'm extremely happy with 2016 and buying small plugins and scripts every time I need them. But the tear-off viewport is something I've been waiting for a long time.

tear-off viewport seems to be nice and useful feature, but upgrading just for this makes no sense at all, at least financially.

Would like to give a shout out to the people still using 2013.  I bought a legit copy several years back.  Please keep corona compatible with 2013 :)  even if its unofficial.

Hi, sorry, this is not possible. There are technical obstacles that slow down development for us.

  Hello,

I'm 2016 user so technically it's not my problem at the moment, but sooner or later it will be. Could you please write something more? What exactly do you mean by "technical obstacles"? Is it 3dsmax licensing related problem or something else?

Will the older 2013 compatible versions still be available to use via subscription?

Yes, we do not have licenses for 3ds Max 2013 so it is impossible to test new Corona versions there, provide support, etc. On the code side there are differences that we have to deal with, which is again hard when we cannot test things properly.

But 3ds Max 2016 is being used by a lot of users and it remains supported, so do not worry.

I wrote about it months ago and I'll write it again. It is possible to buy "second hand" 3dsmax 2011/2012/2013...etc from their original users and make license transfer via autodesk customer service (it's legit, we are not in north america). Also you can ask/hire users for testing? I'm sure lot of them would test corona for free gladly, but it's just my personal opinion.
