Title: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: Ondra on 2013-03-17, 21:33:06
This is archived thread, we have released an improved benchmark based on newer Corona version: https://corona-renderer.com/forum/index.php/topic,11243.0.html - you should use only this one.

I've prepared a standalone version of Corona to run a prepared scene with a reference configuration, and report the rendering time. It is a nice demo of Corona capabilities, and you can use it to judge how fast can your computer run Corona, and what would you gain by upgrading it

You can download it here, to run it, simply download, unpack, run the .bat file:

http://corona-renderer.com/stuff/a4-benchmark

It requires x64 Windows Vista or newer, and Intel Core 2 9xxx or newer, or AMD equivalent. It does not require 3ds max to run. You have to have MSVC redistributable installed to run the application: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13523

It runs for about 5-15 minutes on most computers, then it will pop up windows with copypastable info (and save image to its folder). To get best results, you should not perform any CPU-heavy operations while it is running

Feel free to post your test results

Copyright notice: The model and textures are property of its authors, and it is forbidden to use them outside of this application.

Disclaimer about the speed of the rendering, since many people discuss if the scene is somehow "cheated":  The rendering runs in a partially biased mode with partial lighting interpolation (irradiance caching/light caching-style) enabled, it is not pure path tracing nor unbiased. The settings are slightly tweaked to achieve best performance (about 3 parameters are changed, because by default they are set defensively to allow reasonable rendering of much more complex scenes), and the scene uses portal lighting. Any professional Corona user would be able to tweak the scene the same way. The scene is a real scene created by an artist, with not subsequent tweaking such as removal of geometry. Effect of turning portals on/off is shown here (http://corona-renderer.com/stuff/bench-portal/)

PS: Here is the original .max scene: https://corona-renderer.com/forum/index.php/topic,4354.0.html

 Living room 100 passes
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
Time: 0:8:16, Rays/s: 2,567,451

Edit: One strange behaviour is that on some CPUs or Systeme Corona shoots al lot more rays than on other, on 100 Passes. (Compare my 2.5Mio vs nearly 6Mio on the Guy above this Post)

Besides this that SSE4.1 isn't supported :(
Do you only use the SSE4.1 embree without fallback?
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: Ondra on 2013-03-18, 13:57:15
There is no automatic fallback, you have to use legacy version. But I have decided not to make legacy benchmark version, so the two do not get mixed

By fallback I was referring to SSE2 mode that I thought does exists, but I'm no developer at all :)

It does exist, I call it the legacy version. But to pack both into single binary and do automatic fallback requires some really heavy dark magic I don't want to explore yet

This is just your opinion. I was curious to to compare, at least approximately, two implementations of the Monte Carlo brute force.

except corona is not brute force in this scenario, it uses some limited caching ;)

Even so, the closest result to the Crown in the Lightwave can be obtained by only non interpolated Monte Carlo.

the frequency is a static info provided by the processor, it shows the nominal frequency, and does not change with the actual frequency.

Ok, then i should set the frequency before the rendering to render at 3.9ghz to run at that speed?, the test before i cheked the speed with cpu Z and it was at 3.6ghz.

It is interesting because in vray test 4770k = 3930k

Afaik 3930k is a 6core (12thread machine) and Haswell architecture does not have that much performance boost over Ivy Bridge. It has significant power consumption difference though.

Non the less, I am quite confident 6core Ivy Bridge should perform better than 4core Haswell.

I wonder what Vray version you did tests on, as i remember that in one of older versions, there was some problem with multithreading efficiency. In 2.40.03 everything should run fine though.

this tests makes me think about that is more interesting 4770k for 370$ than 3930k for 620$ (price in Ukraine) if they both are equal

and i think all are interesting in save 250$ for buy new videocard for example))

In simpler scenes, i4770 might come close to i3930, but in no way are they at equal perfomance in Vray :- ), wtf. I have both 3930k and 3770k (5perc. slower than 4770) and difference is exactly where it should be, close to 40perc.

Anyway, can anyone test it at current Xeon generation ? Is there any problem in perfomance scaling to dual cpus or xeon platform ? For example in 2x2867 E5 Xeons (16cores=32 threads).

Seems like A4 on which this is based doesn't work correctly on dual Xeon systems.
With A4 base, it doesn't show the speed increase you get in real life comparing to a quad i7 system.

Bought new pc today. Did some OC. Currently running on 4,4ghz stable on 1,255vcore. Temps are around 65-70stable on Noctua NDH14.
Im quite satisfied. It performs +- same as 3930k on stock clock.

For comparison, my another pc with 2600k is doing 4:33 on 4,4ghz. Those new Haswells are great at stock clock in terms of power consumption/performance ratio but overclocking is meh.
As you can see, 2years old SB performs very well at relatively "low" clock. I can push it to 4,6 easily.

So for those, who have SB and wants to upgrade to Haswell - just decide. I think its not worth. Wait on new generation or go to 3930k if you want maximum performance. But note that 4770k can perform +- same at 4,4ghz as 3930k on stock clock BUT if you push 3930k higher, power consumption is around 500W which is insane.

For example, 4770k at 4,4 eats +180W at plug. 3930k eats same at stock speed but pushing it higher can raise your electricity bills. Especially with one or two powerful GPU in rack.

BTW. here is the result :

Jann, what xeon system do you have ? I really need to buy few new systems, and I originally wanted 2x2687, but I see many people have some trouble with performance scaling with double socket, at which case, I would just buy few new 4930k, but I would not be so happy about that...

What performance gain do you get in "real scene" ? Thank you much in case of answer :- )

Nakama's result is utterly depressing to see double top xeons perform only as good as single 3930k, while the result should be 2.5x higher. Maybe it is only the benchmark setup, but I would like to see the performance scale decently equal in all situations..

I have dual E5-2660 ES xeons in Z9PE-D8 WS board with 64Gb ram. On A4 benchmark they get 3.59 - about the same as overclocked 2700k@4.2Ghz we tested. In real scenes using A5 the xeons got 2-3 times better results than OC'd 2700k. So I suspect that A4 code just didn't scale as well as A5 does :)
If you're looking at retail xeons, 3930k or 4930k is definitely a better price/performance option. If you feel adventurous to get some ES cpus, then 2687w C0 could be a good investment. Or wait for the new Ivy gen xeon range with 10 and 12 cores and get ES of those :D

Jann,

does it scale under both PT/PT and PT/HD conditions ? I've seen some conflicting info on this.

3930k is arguably better deal, but I have already 3 of those and one 2600k. I am not interested in building farms and taking care of so many boxes... also I like the idea of ECC ram and many other features of xeon based systems. Definitely won't be able to afford the new ivy bridge 12 cores, impossible price :- ) I have my limits too.

your CPU probably does not support the latest SSE instructions. You would need a legacy version, but it was never made for the benchmark

Here is a collection of my Farm ...

a bit disappointing is that the older 2xeon 6 core machine is outperforming the 2xeon 8 core machine...
Also surpising but nice to see the old 2xeon 4 core is outperformed by a newer 4core E3-1265

But still not what i would have expected when comparing to benchmarks by some of the i7 machines.

Maybe its just my unrealistic hopes ;)

Nice solution. Is there any posibility to change the resolution? Maybe with some additions in the .bat file.
I´m curious what is happened within 5 or 6k.

Hi, I had run some tests on my pc's and even convinced one of my friends to run it on his i7-4770k and got some pretty strange results ...

1 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3930K CPU @ 4.50GHz (OC) HT ON : Time: 0:03:15, Rays/s: 6,508,898

2 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3930K CPU @ 4.50GHz (OC) HT OFF : Time: 0:04:51, Rays/s: 4,355,515 - NEVER will I disable it again :)

3 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 CPU @ 4.00GHz (OC) HT ON : Time: 0:05:31, Rays/s: 3,836,109

4 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 4.20GHz (OC) HT ON Time: 0:4:23, Rays/s: 4,824,555

while the performance difference of i7-3930K with hyperthreading enabled and without it is understandable yet quite larger than I expected (from my experience) , other two left me wondering - in other render engines ( vray, cinebench, maxwell ) OCed i7-3930K is in most cases twice as fast as OCed i7-920 and here we see similar result , but the OCed i7-4770K should be very close to OCed i7-3930K not to i7-920 - its a pretty fast cpu and such bad results with it are quite unexpected , maybe that's some bug or something ...

Could you tell me what you tweaked on the hardware setup to gain an increase of 32 seconds? I assume it's only an overclocking of the CPU, but if not I'd like to know what else it could be.

Thanks

You can easily do that. Just open "export.conf" file in notepad and write down settings.

Can people using Xeons please specify that you are using 2x cpus, not just one.  It's confusing for some that think that you are getting better times than there i7s.

This 3930 cpu seems quite good, ok it's oc'd at 4.6 but it beats a dual xeon 5690 at 3.47ghz (?!)
How can you explain this? Not a single other cpu, even newer and oc'd acheive this.

I have 3930k also mine is clocked at 4.25ghz, they are that fast, they are six cores. It will easily keep up or beat a 8 core xeon.  Xeon are not that fast, they only show there worth when you have 10 - 12 core xeon in 2x configurations, but they cost a fortune. The 4930k is the best processor for the price.

Your company also paid for RAM in your computer and 3dsmax shaders which you are not using when rendering on the quadro ;)

Hello everybody!
Just registered to test it and here's my result:

Corona Renderer Alpha 4 benchmark scene
Living room 100 passes
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K @ 4.40GHz (it says 3.40, why?)
Time: 0:4:26, Rays/s: 4,536,392

I'll run it tomorrow on dual XEON E5-2680v2 ...

Strange. It seems that difference to the old single i7-2600K
is quite poor (in comparison to other render engines).

Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find a search thread function.

Is there a way to import this test scene into Max, without having to manually enter camera positions from the 'export.scn' file, and having to re-locate all the textures?

Whenever I import the export.obj into Max, all I get is the geometry, and a warning which says it couldn't locate the textures, since the textures are called "material_1137681376" when the importer is searching for them (it says material_1137681376 not found), but on the hard-drive it's called "000000006742CAF0.jpg" for example.

I want to do a comparison between A6 and A7, so I'd like to add a faux-SSS object and a motion blur object into the scene for the render.

Cheerz,

I'll run it tomorrow on dual XEON E5-2680v2 ...

Edit:

Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2680 v2 @ 2.80GHz

Strange. It seems that difference to the old single i7-2600K
is quite poor (in comparison to other render engines).

Do not worry, you can double those results since the standalone version of the test uses only single cpu to calculate the scene :) - That's why the difference is so small :)

EDIT: Btw Keymaster, are there any plans for remaking the standalone benchmark for A7? Or maybe support for more then one processor?

Probably 2.. the benchmark doesn't scale well (actually at all). Current Alpha does (for example my 2p 2680v2 node is exactly 3 times faster than 4930k in no overclock state).
I really think there should be warning or update as originally I guess this wasn't actually benchmark but over the time it's now simply pointless and creates confusion.

Sorry maybe that was confusingly written, my Xeons aren't, but they run at all-core turbo, which is 3.2GHz (from default 2.8), so it's 40x3.2
Ivy Bridge v2 Xeons can't be overclocked because they have locked multiplier, although you can modify FSB, I suggest against, and it's only about 400MHz.

V3 (Haswell) Xeons can be overclocked if you use Workstation board from Asus with their Uefi with allow some 5-10 overclock...somehow, I didn't study, but I guess it's not FSB related.

I hope they won't remove this option of ocing on xeon, I'm pretty happy with my 5650 oc'd, and the 56xx range was nice, especially the 5680, you could go pretty far in oc with it.

Full workstation/nodes with quality PSU, 32GB DDR4 memory and SSD ? You can take the passmark scores from CPUBenchmark, they correlate almost directly to Corona performance.

SO 5820k it's significantly better than 4770k:

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-5820K+%40+3.30GHz&id=2340
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-4770K+%40+3.50GHz&id=1919
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-5960X+%40+3.00GHz&id=2332
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-5930K+%40+3.50GHz&id=2336

Price relation:
4770k - 10269 - $318.98 USD (2013-06-04)     - 81.79%
5820k - 13021 - $389.99 USD (2014-09-07)     - 100% - BASELINE
5930k - 13394 - $589 USD (2014-08-31)          - 151.02%
5960x - 16030 - $1049.99 USD (2014-08-31)   - 269.23%

Performance relation:
4770k - 10269 - 78.86%
5820k - 13021 - 100%      - BASELINE
5930k - 13394 - 102.86%
5960x - 16030 - 123.10%

So IMHO best CPU right now: 5820k

Cheers!

Interesting relation, best price/performance keeps being 5820k
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: Juraj Talcik on 2014-10-16, 23:20:44
It's not good idea to do these comparison based on isolated part like CPU only. While that is what established the performance, in the overall scheme, with the price of 32GB DD4, SSD, quality PSU, X99 motherboard, it's not everything.
For node it's absolutely perfect though, it made 5930k literally obsolete and useless.

For workstation, even the 1000 euro pricemark makes 5960X worthy candidate. It's basically must buy.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: juang3d on 2014-10-16, 23:36:27
The last time I checked the price was not so far from the 4770k, I don't see why do you think the 5960x is a must when the price has a 270% relation vs a 123% in performance :P I don't see the benefit of investing in it, can you explain it a bit more?

Cheers!
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: Juraj Talcik on 2014-10-16, 23:50:54
5960X features basically the same (or better) overclockability than 5820K, so they can be close (25perc.) at base clocks, they really come apart at the top range (4.4 Ghz), where the performance you get from single CPU machine is rivaling the top Xeon range (as those have locked multipliers) and far precedes 50+perc. Sure, the CPU itself costs 3 times as much, but if you're comparing full workstation, for example 32GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, quality parts (NH-D15, platinum grade PSU 750W,etc..), GTX970, you end up comparing 1700 euro vs 2500 euro machine (prices out of head), one being 50perc. faster in rendering performance. And that's pretty good deal.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: juang3d on 2014-10-17, 01:44:40
But you can achieve similar performance with both procs (with the exception that the 5820k has 6 cores, and the 5960x has 8 cores), so why use such proc if the overclocking is more or less the same, you can save the money for other things, like better parts, or a render node, I can make you a 5820k now for 800€ +/-

Of course I can understand what you say, but i've developed a way of work and it's never have a better workstation than the nodes of the farm, in fact, have better nodes than workstations (or at least equal), this way I can have the render times in control without surprises hehehe

Cheers.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: Juraj Talcik on 2014-10-17, 03:01:07
Because every performance increase matter to some. There are situations I require such instant feedback I don't bother with DR at all, so having the most powerful workstation I can get gives me the results I need. Nodes simply help with the overall rendering time.
5960X can be seen as luxury but imho it's only small price increase to some for the value you get back. With up to 19 score in Cinebench11.5, you're getting almost 65-70perc. of multithreaded performance of 2p Xeon E5 26xx v2/v3 WS system, but with superior singlethreaded performance, so you're getting quite a lot of value in one package (for up to 3K is not a lot for truly high-end workstation).
Same can be said for priorities, perfomance/value simply stops being single condition to take into account at some point. But that's already another issue.

From practical standpoint, hypothetical 800 euro 5820k is useless for me for example. I need 64GB ram in every single machine, and that alone is 800 euro for DDR4, such feature already minimizes the role of CPU's cost in overall scheme.

In the end it's like every Hardware choice, you sacrifice something over something based upon your needs and priorities. But 5960X, even for its price, it literally rocks.

This is not overclocking in same way as you do with unlocked multiplier (K-series) i7. He's using BCLK straps (or FSB) instead, and he's basically limited to 3-8 perc. at cost of instability (it's connected directly to PCI lanes too), and it does depend heavily on unit you're lucky to get.

Mmmh I don't share your thoughts, while I can see the benefit of having a higher single threaded performance for some tasks, I can't see that an inctrease of in price of 169% more over the 5820k has any leverage, when you are talking about the ram, well, the 5820k and the 5960k shares the same type of ram, so I still don't understand why you may want to invest so much more for a little more performance, just a 23% more of performance, no matter if you compare it with xeons, because those are totally different computers, no overclock, more expensive parts like the motherboard, more power drain, more noise, more maintenance, and yess, I like more a single CPU computer than a multiple cpu computer.

I'm comparing two CPU's from the same family that can live inside the same system, the difference is that you invest 169% more money with one than with the other to get just 23% more of power, I can't see the benfit of it :)

Cheers!

Ok this became absolutely pointless discussion I don't think you're even reading what I write.

mmmm Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean, I'm assure you that I'm reading what you write with lots of interest, can you explain your point in a different way?

I just don't understand your point because I think you are compairing the 5960 against a 2 Cpu workstation instead of compairing it with it's lower brother, I compare the 5820 vs the 5960 and as an extension with any 2 CPU workstation, I left the 2cpu workstation out of the equation becuase it's cost is way too high in relation with the performance gain, that's why I don't understand why to compare the 5960 vs a 2cpu workstation, keep in mind that I've discarded 2cpu workstations some years ago because it's maintenance is expensive and worse than a single cpu workstation.

I'm not sure if this explains why I answered you what I answered, but maybe I understood you wrong, sorry about that if that is the case.

Cheers.

2p system doesn't take more maintenance than single cpu system these days. I have 2 dual xeons systems, with identical parts as my i7 workstations, except for motheboard and cpus obviously. Same memory, same ssd, same coolers, but that's beside the point.
Same maintenance (none).

The comparison of 5960X to 2p system was that it's almost getting to that sort of performance in single box, with still fraction of price compared to 2p system bringing it to affordable level for people who crave maximum performance in single box.

Of course you can buy 1.5 PCs worth with 5820K, you can also buy 2-3 PCs worth with 4770k, or 5 PCs of i5..or..always find the best value/performance. Except for that isn't the sole factor of choice for everyone. If it was, no one would be buying BMW car if they get almost the same (70perc.) performance for only half the price (Opel,Citroen, whatever there is) and buy two of them, one for wife or sister too. Performance/Value is only single metric, to some the most important, to some completely irrelevant.
Single, powerful workstation will still be valuable to lot of people, either enthusiasts or professionals. And now they can get it "cheap".

5820k is crazy deal from intel (finally), and great choice if you want to build semi-budget renderfarm (because the value/performance will be still better outside of LG2011 platform) or workstation. But that doesn't make it some sort of winner over 5960X. It's different CPU, for different people.

Why it took me so long?
You need to render with alpha 4 benchmark utility if you want to compare render times. Look at first post of this topic.

As promised, here are the results for the 5820k, it's a truly amazing CPU.

OC's at 4.4 just with multiplier, no other thing touched so nothing is beeing stressed, I'm sure I can enable a higher OC but since it's a render node and it's not going to vie overviewed all day I don't want to stress it out too much.
The 5930k it's not worth the money unless you are going to use a lot of GPU's for real time rendering, not for offline rendering (so, not for Octane or iRay, but for videogames and real time engines) and that is because it's extra PCIe lanes AFAIK, but in the end it's not worth the money, IMO you go with the 5820k or the 5960k, this last one it's not worth either IMHO, with the extra money you have to pay for that CPU you can nearly acquire another 5820k :D

Why is not? We are comparing different CPU in the same circumstances...

That doesn't make it accurate if the benchmark itself doesn't scale well, and it doesn't. Not only is it old (A4) but the way the HD Cache is set makes it scale (or basically ignore) badly on high-core CPUs, or double CPUs.
It's extremely confusing and should probably be already addressed because I am getting emails from people asking me why it doesn't work with their dual-xeons for example.

But it just goes on and on and everybody posts the same score all over and over like they would achieve something different. Like how many times for example does 4770k needs to be posted ? 50 times ?

Btw, the SHD's post basically shows nonetheless that 5960X is fantastic performer.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: juang3d on 2014-10-23, 17:58:02
Indeed the 5960X is a great performer, but for me (and it's important to say that this is from my point of view, others can think differently, like you Juraj :) ) it's not worth the price, for a bit more of the difference of the price you can assemble another 5820k and have double performance, so to speak 14000 in benchmark instead of 9000 that you get with the 5960.
I think the 5960X may be worth if ti costs 600€ instead of 995.

I have the 5820k performing in a current real project, so I have consecutive frames from my farm, I post here what I get from my farm, daily build form the 19th october:

i7-2600k@4.3Ghz : 28min 10secs
i7-3770k@4.2Ghz: 25min 32secs
i7-5820k@4.4Ghz: 15min 06secs

This is from my current real project, similar to the one I have published in the gallery forum.

Cheers!

EDIT: BTW about having different scores of the same CPU, that is great, that give us different samples so we can have a more accurate idea of the medium performance that CPU can give us, in Anandtech they received two 5960X for OC testing, one of them was able to be OC'd up to 4.5Ghz while the second one achieved only 4.2Ghz, so more samples more accuracy :)
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: NielsH on 2014-10-23, 18:20:40
I don't think you should compare just the CPU price and the performance, the price of the CPU is only part of the complete system and thus you should also factor in those costs when you really want to compare.

If you have a system which is 2000€ in total with a 400€ CPU which performs at 100% vs the same system with an 800€ CPU which performs at 140% then sure the cost of the CPU might be 200% and thus not cost effective. But the total cost of the system is only 120% making it a far better deal.

Besides that it'll never be a black and white problem considering that everyone has difference financial means, for one person 10% improvement for 1000€ is completely worth it while for someone else even 100% improvement for the same amount just isn't worth it.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: juang3d on 2014-10-23, 18:44:19
I understand that, my current 5820k setup costs exactly 807.39 + vat, it's a render node so it does not have a powerful GPU at all.

Anyways, I would be pretty happy having this same setup but instead having a standard HDD I would opt for SSD, a powerful GTX (not a Titan) and that's it, the Motherboard it's an Asus X99-A

So I doubt the improvement in rendering speed could be a lot greater, the same render node cost with the 5960x is 1319.78€, so 512€ more, so you get in the same machine 32% more performance for 63% more price (based on the benchmark results we saw here).

With that said I'll shut up already XD I just want to make numbers clear for people that want to acquire a machine, maybe someone could prefer more threads, more power even for more money because they can't afford a farm, or they don't want nodes, or because they need more workstation horsepower, and may be people that prefer to have two nodes working side by side and have a bit less workstation horsepower but a lot more render performance, it's up to everyone :D

In any case, no doubt that the new Haswell family it's outstanding!

Cheers!

Btw, the SHD's post basically shows nonetheless that 5960X is fantastic performer.
I'll add a bit to this fact.
We opened the bench scene in 3dsMax 2014 and Corona 7.1, and limited to 100 passes. (do mind possible variations from motherboard, ram, etc)
i7-4790 - 6.44 minutes
i7-3930k stock - 6.00 minutes
i7-3970x @4.2GHz - 5.18 minutes
two Xeon E5-2660 ES - 3.09 minutes
i7-5960x @4.4GHz - 3.10 minutes
two Xeon E5-2697v2 ES - 2.10 minutes

So yeah, apart from DDR4 price, the 5960x with good cooling is a fantastic cpu.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: juang3d on 2014-10-24, 10:00:38
The price is not so bad, 80€ for each 8Gb of Crucial Memory 2133 CL15, not the awesomest ram in the world, but it works perfectly, over the years I found that the difference made by RAM and Motherboard, when all they are from a medium-high family, is residual.

I'll try the same with the 5820k and see what time do it give me when I finish my current project.

If you have daily builds access, can you try the same with the 5960X but with the 19th October build?

Cheers!

Juraj, apart from the answer you can receive from Krimson, I know you did not asked me, but I would like to give this info, keeping the 5960X 24/7 rendering at 4.3 should be easy, I'm rendering with the 5820K since I assembled it and it is at 4.4, it doesn't go over 45/46 celsius and it is completely stable.

The cooler I use is a cheap closed water cooling system, but it works perfectly, the "Cooler Master Seidon 120V", in my store just 33.88 + vat, I use this for all my nodes and workstations, and the temperature is kept very low.

http://www.pccomponentes.com/cooler_master_seidon_120v.html

I'm sure the 5960x should be as efficient as the 5820k in temperature if not more, so 4.3 should be easy for that CPU.

Hope this gives you some info.

Cheers!

Hello Juraj,

A noctua NH-D15.  You recommended it to me on cgarchitect.  :D
It runs fine on 4,3 (all cores) and the hottest it gets until now is 60°C.  The longest time it rendered until now is about 1 hour.
Also i only have intake (2x140) in front of the case and extraction on the back (1x140mm) + 1x140mm intake on the bottom.
The case is very quiet.

The rest of the components of workstation is as follows:
mobo: asus x99-e ws
mem: ddr4 crucial ballistix sport 32gb
nvidia gtx 980
2 ssd's samsung pro
case fractal design define xl
cpu passmark is 20403 and cinebench 15 cpu is 1673.

By the end of this week my renderslave (dual xeon e5-2640 v3 with asus mobo + 64 gb) will arrive.  Will post the benchmarks aswell.

I will keep you informed regarding stability.  I believe it also has got to do with the asus motherboard which has better temperaturemanagement then other motherboards.

kind regards.

Oh :- D Sorry, don't keep much track of where and what I say :- ). Congrats to workstation ! Impressive machine.

Well, nice to hear, I thought NH-D15 would hit some ceiling around 4.3-4.4Ghz with the temperatures. Seeing as the average with custom water loop is now 4.6Ghz (average for past 20 units sold by overclockers UK),
I think your temperatures quite nice. I will begin building one probably next week, just debating whether to go for full custom loop or stay with Noctua classic.

I presume you don't plan to use 4-way SLI (not even physically possible I guess with Noctua), so what was the reason for choosing WS compared to simply spending such money (or less) on Deluxe or ROG ? {but it is the nicest out of them aesthetically, that has to be given :- ) beautiful board

I see you also went with quite low Xeons, what's the all-core turbo frequency on those ?
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: krimson on 2014-10-28, 09:30:31
Hello Juraj,

As for the xeons i know...  First i was planning on buying 2680 v2's.  But then for budget reasons i had to go to 2650 v2's.  With the v3 range coming out the xeon e5-26xx v3 range has shifted and the 2640 v3 has the same (or even better) cpu passmarks then 2650 v2, and is even a bit cheaper and is more "future proof cpu".

- The 2640 v3 has 8 cores and a clockbase of 2.6 ghz turbo 3.4 ghz. (so it's shifted up compared to v2 range)
- As for the motherboard: Asus states that it uses more endurable components in its ws boards, that was the only reason.  It's not that much more expensive (only 50 euros more then deluxe)
- As for the 4-way sli: I'm not planning on getting more gtx's.  But i did put a psu of 1200w in just in case i would put one in extra.  You never know if renderers will combine gpu and cpu in the future.

Good luck on building you new workstation.

kind regards,
Wim Clissen

No, that's One-core maximum turbo-frequency, the all-core I think is 2.8, that's a big difference. But the Asus board gives you option to try 5-10perc. of overclock on them, so maybe, you could potentially get up to 3.0 Ghz during rendering.
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene

hello again Juraj,

Do you think 0.2 ghz will make allot of difference.
I'm thinking about product garanty on the xeon cpu.
Anyway, the passmark is a bit higher then the old 2650 v2's, the cores and clockspeeds are the same, and it's a bit less expensive.

From my personal experience, 0.2Ghz higher "All core" makes for around 3-5% decrease in render time - on average. This was on last generation CPUs though.

You're not breaking any warranty, the Asus overclock will probably only readjust BLCK strap or some other trick because the multiplier is locked. Even with such modest overclock (it depends on how lucky you are with the pieces you get), you're not really rising the overall TDP much, it's more than fine.
Yes it does make difference,  can be another 4-7perc. free performance. (obviously the percentage depend on relative increase, for i7 at 3.5 to 3.7 is nothing, but at 2.6 to 2.8 it's more noticeable. )

5960 performs much better then dual xeon. (strange... am i doing something wrong here (maps and file comes from other computer through router... bottleneck?)
dual xeon performs better in mental ray
passmark scores and cinebench 15 where also better for dual xeon.

Something is pretty wrong given that you have 1mil ray in your Xeon system and 2 mil in 5960X. All cores are rendering when you open task manager ?

I am using daily of A7.1 and my 2P Xeon 2680v2 gives me 3times the ray amount of of 4930k, so everything pretty correct there.

so the score is still not reliable comparison of performance difference, but shows the flawed nature of this benchmark purely}

{and that's discounting fact the benchmark is optimilized, if you would run the scene separately in default Alpha4 installation you would get even slower result,
so the score is still not reliable comparison of performance difference, but shows the flawed nature of this benchmark purely}

Yeah that explains why it seemed like (barely) 1 cpu were used in the Alpha4 Benchmark.. Anyway it´s a fun benchmark to test new hardware :)

The whole fx lineup has only 1 FPU per 2 Interger cores. Thus for rendering and such we only have a 4-core.
The first time it hit me when I was rendering a VFX sequence for a film. My 8350 took 10 seconds longer, than the fuc**** 2,7ghz 6-core Phenom x6 1045 next room. It really is a bloddy joke.

The upside, is that you can ignore traditional stability when overclocking and bench stability on FPU tasks. I got my fx 8350 on an hyper 212 evo on 4,7 ghz 24/7, without a crash and good performance in corona. If I open up prime 95 it immidetly stops all stresstests within two seconds due to bad output and too low voltage.

You experience the horror many v-ray users moan about, when they got that processor, just google fx-8350 vray

Hey guys,
just pondering the idea of what else I can do to my machine to make it a faster corona best.

I have a
Intel Core i7 I7‑4930K 3.4 GHz 6‑core Processor

with 16GB of ram not sure of the specs on that.

But wanted to know if add to my Ram would speed things up and maybe switching to an SSD

Overclocking of the existing CPU or buying of a new faster CPU can help you speed up

Adding Ram or getting an SSD wont speed up anything, provided the Scene is smaller than your 16 gigs. Since Parsing times are small anyways, an SSD wont speed up anything, expect 3dsmax opening times. You already have a good CPU, an upgrade makes only sense if you go to the current haswell flagship, (eg. 1000$ 5960x). Otherwise, get yourself a cheap cooler, eg. Hyper212 EVO for 25$ and overclock like a mad man. Expect 5%-20% improvment, depending on silicon lottery.
If you want more power you have to get into distributed rendering, no other way.

uhhm... wat?
Let's keep the benchmark thread clear of these, for comparison sake.

edit: just for fun, 1 TitanZ 3000$ of amazon, 1 Titan 1200$. Hard limited to 6gb vram.
8400$ in graphicscards alone and you still need 2 mins for a clean image? Something off on your side, I recall octane demos being a whole lot faster.
Compared to my 8mins on my 160$ fx8350, I'd rather stay on corona side^^

Sorry for posting this in Corona related thread.
You can find an updated version here in the following thread.
After optimizing the scene (light portals etc.) I get an almost clean render after 50 seconds.
I think this can be optimized even further.
https://corona-renderer.com/forum/index.php/topic,6758.45.html

just for fun, 1 TitanZ 3000$ of amazon, 1 Titan 1200$. Hard limited to 6gb vram.

These infos are a little bit outdated.
I got my Titans for 900€ each and the Titan Z for 1400€.
Also vram consumption is very moderate. You can easily render complex scenes with proxies and stuff below 5 gb. It's not comparable to convential system ram.
You also have the option to use system ram for textures.

The new Titan X is coming out next week with 12gb of vram.
It seems like this card could be as fast as one Titan Z card (TBC!).

I don't want to advertise Octane here, just clarify some facts.
It was not the intention to start a never ending debate which engine is better, just wanted to give you guys a comparison.

Hey, a fellow Surface Pro 3 user :)
I'll need to test this with my i7 Pro3, see if I can get it done faster. But 17min compared to 2 min on a desktop is quite terrible :D

Hint: SP3 throttles heavily under prolonged load. If you point a tiny fan to the back of it you can prevent it from doing so (weird, search this on youtube!). I would suspect the rendertime to cut to ~7-10min or maybe even less if you can stop it from throttling.

1.9 - 2.9GHz should perform better. Even my 1st gen i3 laptop is faster. Maybe you are working in some low-performance power plan?
Title: Re: Corona Alpha4 Benchmark scene
Post by: Rimas on 2015-05-12, 11:58:57
Maru - what CPU does your laptop have? These are 'U' series low-wattage CPUs with a max TDP of 15W :)
But I agree, I believe it's throttling. I'll test the scene later today to confirm.

On a side note - SP3 only has a 'balanced' power plan exposed to the end user. A quick registry modification can unlock the high-performance plan, which is what I will be using. Beautifully enough - XTU can also overclock the CPU quite freely too (I can go all the way to 3.9GHz, I think, the last time I tried). I'll try the scene with a small USB fan to reduce throttling and these performance settings in mind.

Hmm, in theory these low-wattage CPUs should do better than this one (looking at transistors/year/frequency). I'd guesstimate 5-10min. What was the benchmark time on yours, 19min?

This seems a bit off when an overclocked 6-core i7 get s a better score. Is a 12-core Xeon not as powerful as it used to be?

I think this topic should be locked. It brings confusion and makes more harm than good. Hopefully there will be new benchmark sooner rather than later which will lets to compare on equal conditions.

You should chek if the hypertreading is on.

We have 5 of X5650 runs perfect and 40-50% faster than 3990K

This is completely irrelevant as Corona is purely CPU-based. Unless you are just showing off. ;)

No, actually the point was this is more of a gaming rig than modeling rig, cards are gaming. I'm glad in this case that I went for what was real close to max CPU available at that time. I was scrolling through and saw my 5930 seems to be winning, please tell me somebody else has run that faster? I got this seven months ago and because Corona is especially lethal to my processor it's only overclocked from 3.7 to 4GHz, which is going to be rock stable unless you got a very bad chip. That's a long time to be near the top of the heap in desktops. I didn't see anyone else with a 5930, and that also surprised me considering Corona is a processor renderer. I guess for today's professionals they use a farm so local horsepower doesn't matter as much? Been over 15 years now since I had a job in modeling, which is like pre-cambrian rendering, so I really have no clue how modern studios operate.

Do we have a corona benchmark score comparison site? similar to benchwell or cinebench?
If not, could we? If yes, where?
Thanks,

Nope, not yet at least. I recall Ondra mentioning a new benchmark version to be released, but that was some time ago.
This would require an update to Corona standalone, which was not updated in over 8 months.

I'm rather sure an automated db will never be created, exept maybe a google spread sheet with manual input, as dev time is needed elsewhere (hopefully adaptivity)
But by the looks of it,currently the only way to get a speed measurement, that is representative is to download the benchmark scene and open it up with Corona 1.3
