hi dubcat! how do we get correct IOR values when we do not have a scanned glossiness texture to use it with a LUT? can we use the normal texture with a LUT?
Hey!
I have a LUT that converts old reflection maps to IOR and a Corona map setup that converts normal maps to IOR. I thought I shared it a while back, maybe I never got that far. I will compile them as soon as possible!

in the case of non-scan textures where a reflection or a glossiness map is eyeballed generated, is it more correct to use the normal map to generate the IOR with a LUT? I think it is, but if IOR is attached to the reflection/glossiness value and a normal map is also auto generated from photoshop or any other normal map generator, then .... (sorry for the long prelude) .... what is the correct way to getting the accurate IOR values?

thank you!

really good work. just imagine if this was done with Fstorm, you wouldn't be able to tell if it was CGI or reality. what is it about Fstorm that makes light look so real I have no idea. (maybe Juraj could give his two cents about that) great work bro.

I think a scene like this deserves a making-of thread, the materials are almost perfect.

cheers +

I had a look at FStorm galleries...

In most cases one can immediately see that it´s CG.
Doesn't look more real that any average Corona render.

I would even say Corona looks more realistic...

Of course as always it depends on who is rendering. :)

I mean, just my general impression on FStorm. Nothing magical.

Fstorm is simply more sensitive to light than corona, so where you'd get almost no reflections, refractions or shadows in corona you'd get all of that in fstorm. Fstorm gives more subtle shadow variations and its got a proprietary implementation of GGX that makes the reflection appearance closer to reality. it also resolves noise differently so you get a better blur-sharpening results with better AA. the post there is way different and way superior to corona and it behaves like a camera as in contrast to a light sensor which is the implementation of corona.
Vray<Corona<Fstorm end of story.

don't get me wrong, I use corona 99% of the time, and I do have the recipe for photorealism but I occasionally use Fstorm and it's another world except that the usability there is inferior to corona's. look up their facebook page you might even love it.

and hey I have no interest in a fanboy duel here, I'm not one. I couldn't care less as long as the render engine delivers what it promises.

for example in this image although the materials have minimal imperfections and the glossiness in a lot of places is off, the light still looks great. and the tonemapping is bringing a lot of info in the highlights and reflections.

this one too, the materials are substandard (the artist's mistake most likely) but the light is crazy

Thank you much :- )

my pleasure Juraj :)

Thanks JViz,

I haven't tried Fstorm yet to be honest. I was thinking about giving it a try but I'm afraid mu GPU is way too slow to handle it efficiently (quadro K3100M).
Is there trial version for fstorm?

As for "making of" I'll think about it, maybe in spare time but I can't promise anything.

cheers

there is a trial version of Fstorm to my knowledge. I mainly use corona but I know how powerful Fstorm can be for product shots. if you ever do a making of that would make us very happy ;)

very interesting so far. I'm at page 17 of this enormous very informative post. do you discuss how to remove lighting and reflection from a texture -taken by a camera- to get the Albedo?

hi there

my setup is two separate 2683-v3 machines. i got them a couple years ago off ebay. these ones aren't ES they are OEM, they are a little bit more expensive than the ES ones but still way cheaper than retail ones. I'm looking to upgrade to Threadripper soon.

how you could evaluate it for yourself is by doing a price to R15 score ratio, find which is lower and choose that.
ie build each option on its own take the sum of all components and work your way from there

nkilar, I second your opinion. Threadripper is the way to go, at least for now.

« on: 2019-02-09, 15:07:25 »
thanks for the info. agreed, Intel needs to work hard to impress us or even get our trust again. they held back progress because when they had no competition and took extortionate sums of money from us for 800 R15 points cpu's. Intel will have to show us something REAL.

I used to look at the performance gains over the years and couldn't even imagine we would hit something like 1200 for a reasonable price any time soon. threadripper came along and changed everything. 5000 for 1600pounds or 3200 for 800pounds heck for that you had to own two xeons to get there, which at the time I had to do, used xeons that was.

looking forward to more competition and knocked down prices.
