Feature requests / More intelligent 'Render only Mask'

Currently, I am rendering some extra masks out for an animation,  basically the attached image.

if I render normally, with 10 passes it takes 19 seconds a frame, 10 of which is rendering.

If i render with a region drawn, either a max or corona VFB region it makes no difference, the time drops to 7 - 8 seconds a frame. and render time is around 1 second for the exact same mask.

Drawing regions won't really work in scenes where you need lots of additional masks or have more extreme movement

Can we have a more intelligent system that only renders/calculates what it needs to instead of calculating the entire scene? This shot is 150 frames so without drawing a region I would be waiting over 45 mins instead of about 18

Feature requests / CMasking_Mask iterative letters

Any chance you could update the CMasking_Mask render element to either use iterative letters or even add an underscore after the number?

If kept at default it doesn't work for animation and needs to be renamed.   For example, CMasking_Mask001 frame 01 becomes CMasking_Mask0010001 so AE/Fusion thinks it is frame 10,001

not a big request, but would speed my day up by a few seconds

General Discussion / Lock sampling pattern - opinions?

Hi.  I am looking for some opinions regarding the 'Lock Noise Pattern' option in the render settings (on by default).

I am aware that disabling and using Corona's Denoiser can cause some issues with flickering.

I personally don't like the look of a locked noise pattern, it can look a bit weird, like its stuck on the lens.  And since I have been using Redshift a lot more - which has the lock noise pattern turned off by default - I have been hoping to get that more natural grainy look in my renders.

Just wondering if anyone has had much luck or experimented with disabling the "Lock sampling pattern".

Feature requests / CIE - save some elements

So, from the Corona Image Editor when I click save all it would be nice to have a click and hold option to 'Save some...'   From there a dialogue appears, I can uncheck the passes I dont want to be saved out and then CIE does my bidding.

There are plenty of times that I want to be able to play with multiple light passes in CIE, but in the end I don't really want or need to save them for use in PS. I end up saving them out just because it is quicker and easier than saving out 10 passes manually just so I can skip 4 or 5 I don't need.

Bug Reporting / Corona saving layered EXR on render end

Hi,

We have an issue where in some scenes, and apparently for no reason, Corona starts to save out HUGE layered exr files rather than normal single image files.

The scenes haven't really changed, a couple of geometry changes, but all render settings are the same.  We are saving as half float exr.

Does Corona even support saving as multilayered exr?  I have never seen an option for it.


This is a massive issue for us, it takes 30 mins to save out the files and because it is doing this for every render element we can easily chew through a couple of hundred Gb of space overnight.

We are using Backburner, but we have the exact same issue if we manually save straight from the VFB

Bug Reporting / Corona DR using all of disk space

Hi,

We are having quite a few issues with Corona DR saving all the DR data to disk but without clearing the files.  So we come into work in the morning to find that half our jobs haven't rendered and we have this message on screen.  This happens on every machine that has DRServer running

The files that aren't being cleared are in C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\CoronaRenderer\DrData, are 600mb layered exr's, and there are over 100gb of files in the folder

This has only started to happen since Corona 3 hotfix 1, previous to this we had never seen this issue.

General Discussion / PhoenixFD foam workaround??

Is there a way to get PhoenixFD foam to render with Corona?  I feel like I managed to get this working back in 1.6 or 1.7 but now I don't get anyting.

I know its not supported yet, but if there is a workaround it would be great to know.

I'm currently using VRay 3.6, but having no end of issues with motion blur eating up all my memory and not working correctly, which seems to be a bug, and was hoping I could jump back to Corona for this.  Is there any new support for foam in the nightly builds?

Feature requests / Better automatic render element naming

Could we have a slightly better automatic naming of our render elements?

Currently, we have Mask01,  Mask02, etc. The problem with this is that with animation if the elements aren't manually renamed, you end up with Mask01001, Mask01002, Mask02001, Mask02002 etc.  which causes a load of problems and time spent using renaming software to fix the problem.

Adding an underscore at the end of each element would fix this issue, or using alphabetical increments.

I need help / [solved] Bloom and Glare on separate pass

I am wanting to use bloom and glare in an animation, but I want to save it onto its own render element and keep my beauty pass without... just for extra control in comp.

Is there a way to do this.

Resolved bugs / DR Server not picking up

This is on a single machine at work that has always worked completely fine in the past, then all of a sudden DRServer doesn't work anymore.

Rendering locally works fine, and grabbing other nodes/boxes with my local machine as the host also works fine.  Other boxes trying to pick my machine up just fail.  It appears in the DR list, and starts to download the scene, but seems to just quit and repeat. Memory usage for DrServer gets to around 550mb then drops to 30mb, then repeats...

We are getting a really weird bug across the studio at the minute, pretty sure it has only just started this past couple of weeks...

Basically, if you click to close max, the dialogue box comes up asking whether you would like to save the file, click 'Don't Save...'  and max saves the file anyway.  Is anyone else having this issue or know any fixes for it?

We are constantly jumping in and out of each other's files to take assets/textures etc. and with this current bug, it's pretty easy to overwrite each other's work.

Created at Mr.P Studios as part of our weekly 'practice'/r&d projects.  We were each given a random number from 0-9 and random colour to create a small illustration for the 36daysofytpe project that runs on Instagram.  I got 8 and blue and decided to make a character.

The character was sculpted in Zbrush, fur was done with the standard Max hair and fur tools and rendered with one of the Corona daily builds.

Bug Reporting / Corona Version mismatch bug (1.7 hotfix 2)

We have just upgraded across the studio to 1.7 hotfix 2, and noticing a couple of problems.

Some scenes crash a couple of times on backburner before they actually pick up and render, which is pretty standard with BB, but seems to be more frequent since the upgrade from 1.6.3

One of the errors we are getting, both on BB and when rendering locally, is Corona version mismatch, Slave version 1.6 (hotfix 3), Master version 1.7 (hotfix 2)... etc etc 

All the machines across the studio are running the same version, I have checked the IPs from the errors and the nodes that are coming up with an error definitely are running the same versions.

This was our final image for this years The Monster Project.  Its a cool little project where kids draw monsters and artists from all over the world recreate them in their own style.

We finished this a few weeks ago using one of the Corona daily builds, not sure which one, but absolutely loving the new skin shader.

Restart CoronaDR on render end - same as V-Ray default DR option.  We are currently having a few problems with DR where jobs pick up but don't actually start, they load 5-6gb into ram then just stall indefinutly. Restarting CoronaDR fixes it straight away.  This is across multiple scenes, generally when they are quite heavy or if the previous scene was quite heavy.  So would be nice to have a 'fresh' CoronaDR running after each render.

Use localhost option would also be nice, so we can DR but not use the local machine and continue to work/render.
