Incredible! Could you share some of your tonemapping and lighting settings? Absolutely photographic.

Same issue here on one of my scenes.

In for answers. Good elevated and expansive backplates are like gold dust!

General CG discussion / Re: Selecting (Corona) Camera
« on: 2020-03-20, 12:05:00 »
I've got the same experience as OP, it relates specifically to the Corona cam - the standard and physical cam are much easier to select in general.

When trying to select the Corona camera, 7 times out of 10 I end up selecting both the target and the camera when clicking just on the camera. Other times I end up selecting nothing and have to click a few times to select the Corona cam...and then end up selecting both the cam and target :-|

Don't know if it makes a difference but I'm using a 4K screen.

+10 for the rug tutorial. This is the best CG rug I've ever seen! Would be good to know how resource heavy this is and whether this approach is feasible on fast paced live projects (i.e is there some sort of generic rug preset that can be saved and loaded for differently shaped rugs and are we able to use black and white masks to easily define patterns/colours/sculpting lines) - I would pay good money for this *wink, wink, nudge, nudge*

Great airy mood, what's your lighting setup? Looks like Corona sun and sky with tweaked values?

^Those VFB settings are pretty decent, and are a good starting point but as JViz noted, colours can get extremely weird and don't react how they should IRL.

The compact editor is slow for simply exactly the same reasons the whole interface is slow - single threadedness and Max's tendency to slow down over time, even if you're not doing anything with it. This problem has been there since forever, unfortunately, and it increasingly looks like it will not be resolved unless the whole thing is rewritten from the ground up (which will probably never happen as Autodesk needs to keep the releases on a yearly schedule to appease investors and one year is by far not enough to fully rewrite such a complex thing as Max from the ground up).
What might help are the environment variables for the interface drawing and restarting the computer often (because restarting the whole machine is the only true and proven way of making Max run fast again, at least for some while).

I'm fairly certain Tyson Ibele (the guy behind Tyflow) could sort out max given enough time. He's recently multi threaded the smooth operator and completely re-written the animation preview feature in a couple of days. Why Autodesk doesn't hire him is beyond me!

some video info...

Now this is what I'm talking about. The comparison between ACES and SRGB when pushing the light/exposure/saturation is exactly what we need in Corona. No more ugly linear-esqe burnouts and colour weirdness (and conversely ultra clamped muddy grey renders to get things under control), but instead actual filmic response like Fstorm.

This should be one of the top priorities for the dev team imo as it's a fundamental part of the output/realism of the engine.

Those hedges are fantastic, how did you make them? If they are stock models would you mind letting me know which ones? Always on the lookout for convincing vegetation.

Feature requests / Re: The most wanted feature?

We will investigate the diffuse models when doing the PBR, as well as other changes, this is why this feature is currently ranked as the most development-intensive one in our tracker. I cannot tell in advance how the end result will look like and what models it will use.

Awesome, thanks for the update!

Changes on the roadmap are because we had a hackathon with chaosgroup guys and found several of their technologies useful - new cache that is more stable in animations, adaptive dome light sampling, and bloom&glare effect that is better looking, more customizable, and also significantly faster. The sky model is result of independent research.

The only downside is that we will probably not make the PBR material on time for v6 release. I am still not expecting the PBR material to cause any sort of revolution, Corona material is 90% there. I am worried that when we finally release it, people will still be disappointed, because it will not make their images magically better.

I will not address the ridiculous conspiracy vray theories. If there is somebody not burned out by dealing with entitled fanboys, please do it for me ;).

Ondra, re the PBR material update - will it include the new diffuse shading model? There were a couple of images posted in another thread showing Arnold's Lambertian shading implementation that looked light years better on rough/diffuse surfaces. Would be great if we could get some controls for sheen/coating and whatever controls the falloff effect on fabrics (via realism and not falloff fakes).

Also any word on improving bump mapping (similar to how you can achieve realistic super fine anistropy in Fstorm just through bump mapping and it's not view/zoom dependant). I don't know if this is linked to improving the material model or a general engine improvement.

I'm running avast

Please uninstall this shit right now :- ) I am fully serious.

It has no benefit compared to what is in Windows 10, and it's just actively spying on you and selling your data. It's the biggest crap-ware on market.
For those who absolutely need for some obscure reason something 3rd party, NOD by ESET is the only reputable solution.

But actually Windows 10 is more than enough.

https://www.techradar.com/news/avast-shuts-down-jumpshot-after-data-selling-controversy

- Avast sold user data
- Allowed breaching of VPN
- Is currently banned by all major goverments and businesses
- It was always shit to begin with (just like Kaspersky "I am not russian spyware" Suite)

Well, damn. Better get on it! Had no idea they messed up that bad. Thanks for the heads up man.

I second Juraj's comments. Would like to see some real-world examples of this i.e time to max startup with bitdefender disabled, then firewall disabled vs stock.

I had a quick go at disabling some group policy settings for bitdefender as I'm running avast and no noticable differences were seen...
