Hardware / Re: Very noisy new ryzen build
« on: 2024-01-11, 16:19:12 »
I am too experiencing a new loud ryzen. I cool the Ryzen 9 7950X with a Noctua Dh-15 Cooler in a Fractal define 7 case. I am somewhat disappointed. You hear the machine even idle(I have to check the case-fans, too). Rendering it gets louder, but what is really annoying with short spikes of 'full throttle'.

I am thinking of switching to water cooling. Never had such a experience with Noctua.

[Max] General Discussion / Re: TX image format?
« on: 2023-08-17, 09:33:00 »
Interesting to read that Chaos use tx-files as well. I thought tx-files were in Arnold-thing. In Arnold it is automated. There is a tool for converting textures to tx-files, but I believe most people use the checkbox 'auto-convert textures to tx'. In some cases you want to alter the mip-map-bias to get the texture sharper, but usually I don't care about the rx-files at all.

Juraj, what do you think of the newer C2 OLED TV(42")? Thank you.

Thanks for your insights, Juraj. And thanks for the link- I will have a close look.

Thanks you, Tom, but I don't think in this case this is really related to the render engine. It's more about 'best bang for the buck(et)'. And: Can I get this (possible dual)epyc-system into a case and how to cool it.

Hardware / New budget Render-node: AMD epyc?
« on: 2023-04-20, 20:49:00 »
Hello,
we're working on a short movie(unfortunately not a short short, but a very long short movie) rendering with Arnold. Some years ago I purchased 3 render nodes bases on Juraj's great e5-2670 thread(Thanks a mill!). But today the 32 threads feel outdated and I began to swap them with e5-2695 and I got a fourth render node(serverrack with e5-2695 with 128RAM for 150 bucks :) -managed to get it into a fractal design define... 4 I think?).
Nonetheless: For a CU-Shot I'm facing render times like ~1hour/frame and I need some real support for my little 4 render buddies. I am looking at items like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/185233306187?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160811114145%26meid%3Db9083c2c421a4e60a00c3b073676c066%26pid%3D100667%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D2%26sd%3D185233306187%26itm%3D185233306187%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2351460%26brand%3DSupermicro&_trksid=p2351460.c100667.m2042
either from ebay/china or from a refurbished server seller. What do you think? My plan would be to find a good XXL-Case for that node and go either the water-cool or the air-cooling road.
Looking forward to your thoughts. Thank you.

Thank you very much. Yes, Zbrush is always smooth. Actually viewport in Maya is absolutely ok, too. Things change when I go to component mode, select vertices, delete them or convert the selection. This is terribly slow. But this is because of good old single threaded CPU-task. I think I rather need a new workstation.

At the moment I'm dealing with large poly counts while cleaning meshes from photogrammetry. The exact workflow isn't ironed out . I'm looking at Agisoft Metashape, Zbrush, Meshlab and Maya at the moment. I'm on a i7-5960X with sufficient RAM and a 1070 GPU. Editing ond orbiting in the viewport is quite slow. I'm wondering how much I would benefit from a new GPU- let's say a 3080. Anyone here who dares to put a number on this? How much faster I can get with new hardware...
Thank you!

Hardware / Re: RTX 3090 - Where to buy?

There is a Telegram channel(FE PartAlert) messaging, when a FoundersEdition-Card is available in Europe.Nonetheless you have to be fast( account in that shop already created-credit card info etc.)

Hi, back in the days I build 3 nodes with the e5-2670 very similiar to Juraj's http://talcikdemovicova.com/32-thread-build-on-budget/ . Nowadays these machines feel a bit outdated. Is the e5-2697 v2 (12 cores) the most powerful update solution for the chipset? They cost a 100 bucks on ebay and I am not rendering right now, so I guess I'll wait until the prize drops.
Is there any significant prize drop on the horizon like the e5-2670 one? Or is this impossible to foresee because you don't know when the big vendors upgrade their servers?
Do you see any other budget options now or in the near future?
Thank you.

Hi, I'm currently texturing skin and I'm not that happy with my micro-details. I work with Substance Painter. I prefer buying software- unfortunately I don't have access to the materials on Substance source. I don't have Zbrush at hand, so I have to rely on alphas I grabbed and bought from the web. When I switch to 4K it begins to look okish, but not the level I am aiming for.

I'm looking at texuring.xyz ( https://texturing.xyz/collections/microskin ) This looks promising, but pricey. Pricey I fear beyond my reach.
Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

Off-Topic / Corona Virus: Donate computing power for science

Hi guys,
I just stumbled on this: https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/foldinghome-put-your-cpu-and-gpu-in-use-against-the-corona-covid-19-virus.html
and decided to install it on my machines. (Already getting warm here.....)
If you guys have some spare render power, you might consider to donate it. https://foldingathome.org/
thanks

Hardware / 10bit output with Geforce Cards
« on: 2019-08-19, 22:12:42 »
I don't have a fancy 10bit Screen and don't plan to buy one in the near future, but I just read that Nvidias new driver unlocks 10bit.
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/149125/en-us
I remember reading a few threads here dealing with the limitations to Quadro Cards only.  If they really have buried this stupid Quadro-policy, I would change my mind about fancy 10bit screens.
Have I overlooked some details? Anybody here with the necessary hardware to comfirm that this actually works?

Hardware / Re: Workstation
« on: 2019-07-19, 15:44:20 »
There are two misconceptions here:
1. GHz doesn't necessarily equals CPU-speed. I own an old fx 8350. Sometimes I use it for comp renderings. Compared to the outcome it is pretty power hungry. I will get rid of the machine soon.
2. Max viewport performance will not explode because you have a new CPU a few percent faster than the old. Your user experience will most likely stay the same in most circumstances.

General CG Discussion / Re: best mouse for 3ds MAX
« on: 2018-11-30, 22:43:52 »
Wow.
I like the razor tartarus. I have pain in my left hand from using Shift Ctrl Alt, Q W E R constantly.
Can it be programmed to replace those keys?
Yes, you can map anything on those keys from hotkeys to mouseclicks to macros.
What the tartarus is good at:
- you can map basically anything you want. And afaik you can define modifiers to buttons so you can map a button to three different settings
- the design is really great. My hand lays very comfortable at it. I chose the lower side button to be the ALT-key. ALT ist the'orbit'-button in most 3d-apps and - jeez- the alt-key of the keyboard I used for my diploma movie ages ago, was really sanded down by heavy usage. With this layout I only have to lower my thumb.
What tartarus is not good at it:
- try it at a local store. I think the keys are ok, but could be better.
- It's gaming hardware. The Software comes with a shitload of useless 'cool' stuff...
- ...which actually eats performance. When I toggle from one Software to another it takes ages(seconds) for the tartarus to change the profile. I believe it's because I have differnet colors mapped to the softwares and it waits until the illumination changed to the different color. This is really annoying.
- it could be heavier or should come with proper anti-sliding-stuff
- you can't color map keys- only per App. I would pay a shitload for a similiar device which is able to color map each key individually on a per software basis
